M’goun (4,071m) | Ouanoukrim (4,089m)| Toubkal (4,167m)
20th - 29th July: £795
Day 1: Arrival Day - Fly to Marrakech
The adventure begins! You will be met and picked up from Marrakech Airport and transferred to our hotel. Settle in and then why not head out to experience the famous Djemaa el Fna square where your senses will explode with the riotous colours, sounds and smells of Marrakech. Watch the entertainers performing, the myriad of food stalls lit up and the general hustle and bustle of the medina.
Peak 1: M’goun (4,071m)
While crowds flock to Jebel Toubkal, nature lovers can be found heading to the M’goun Massif known for its pristine, prehistoric landscapes and with some of Morocco’s highest peaks and toughest trekking.
Day 2: DRIVE TO VALLEY OF AIT bOUGAMEZ TO BEGIN TREKKING
After breakfast, we depart for the 5 hour drive into the valley of Ait Bougamez (Happy Valley) before beginning our trek. At Arous village we will be met by our mule team and then set off on our 2-3 hour trek to Ikiss n Arous camp. [Breakfast - B, Lunch - L, Dinner - D]
Day 3: trek to the Tarkeddit Plateau - 5-6 hours hiking
An ascent straight after breakfast, we will be met by the Tizi-n-Tazite (2,900m) pass and the Tizi-n-Targadit (3,400m) pass before heading down to the Takeddit Plateau. This is a remote area with very few other trekkers and favoured as a base for the ascent of M’goun. [B, L, D]
Day 4: ascent of M’goun - 10-12 hours hiking
We set off early in the morning at approximately 3am, for our summit attempt of M’goun. This is a long, slow ascent which becomes steeper on approach to the summit, though the ridge line is truly spectacular. After reaching the summit and taking in the views, we begin our demanding descent into camp at Assaka. [B, L, D]
Day 5: Trek out and 4X4 jeep transfer to lac d’ifni camp - 1-2 hours hiking
Today is a rest day with a 1-2 hour hike to our transfer at Imi-n-Oulaoun. Our 4X4 jeeps will transfer us to the next range in the High Atlas Mountains and take us down the route past Skoura and the southern town of Ouarzazate before going North over the passes of the High Atlas and smaller roads to Amzouzart. On arrival we meet with our second set of mules and continue on a short trek to Lac D’Ifni Camp. [B, L, D]
Morocco’s second highest peak, Ouanoukrim is lower than Toubkal and less travelled but often considered more challenging. The hike up is sometimes said to be more astounding that Toubkal and on a clear day, views can be seen of Toubkal and the Sahara. Neither Ouanoukrim nor Toubkal are considered technical climbs in the Summer however sections are steep and in some areas require scrambling.
Peak 2: Ouanoukrim (4,089m)
Day 6: Trek to the nelter refuge (3,200m) - 5-6 hours hiking
We leave Lac D’Ifni Camp and make our way to the refuge below Ouanoukrim and Toubkal. The route ascends to the pass of Tizi-n-Ouanaoumas (3,684m) before descending down to the Nelter camp. [B, L, D]
Day 7: Ascent of Ouanoukrim (4,089m) - 8-9 hours hiking
An early wake up call and we leave camp at approximately 4am for our summit of Ouanoukrim trekking up to the Tizi-n-Ougan (3,750m) and onwards to the summit. This route is rocky in places, with minor scrambling but no technical assistance required. We reach the summit mid morning and take in the views before heading down to Nelter camp. [B, L, D]
Peak 3: Toubkal (4,167m)
Day 8: Ascent of Toubkal (4,167m) - 7-8 hours hiking
After a light breakfast at approximately 4am, we begin the hike to the summit of Toubkal, the final and highest of the peaks. It’s an early start to make best use the weather and it’s a tough ascent to the summit. It’s a similar path to Ouanoukrim, with some rocks, some scrambling sections and some loose scree. We traverse the southern ridge to reach the summit at 4,167m and the top of our final peak. After taking in the views and the obligatory summit selfie, we start the descent down to camp. [B, L, D]
Day 9: Descent to Imlil and road transfer to Marrakech - 4 hours hiking
After the tough climbing for the past few days, today’s descent will be much easier back to Imlil where your transport will be waiting to whisk you back to Marrakech and a well deserved rest. We will try to get you back as soon as possible so that you have time to go and explore the Medina and the souks, or treat yourself to a well deserved massage. Maybe try your hand at bartering and bagging a bargain or two!
After a long awaited shower, it’ll be time for our celebration dinner and drinks together. [B, L]
Day 10: Departure day - transfer to Marrakech Airport
Today is our last day and group transfers will be available to take you back to Marrakech Airport. [B]
